Veuve Clicquot is the first champagne to be called a “modern” champagne due to the advancements in the méthode champenoise made through the process of remuage.

It was founded by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron in 1772, and played a great role in the recognition of champagne as a drink for the elites as it is seen now.

History of Veuve Clicquot

While she was not the founder,  Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot comes to mind whenever the name Veuve Clicquot comes up.

Born in 1777 and widowed at the age of 27, Madame Clicquot made good use of her tough character to establish a name that went on to achieve iconic status among champagne buffs.

After convincing her father in law to take over her late husband’s business, she invested 80,000francs and went into partnership with Alexandre Fourneaux, a master of champagne assemblage.

Madame Clicquot faced stiff competition in her early days in charge of the business. With the harsh economic conditions and poor sales, bankruptcy loomed.

Fourneaux pulled out of the business, but Clicquot was resolute and stayed put, and with the assistance of her cellar-man Antoine-Aloys de Muller, she perfected the art of remuage, or riddling.

Riddling involved placing bottles in special racks to hold them at an angle. The bottles are then rotated by a quarter-turn every day for six to eight weeks.

The lees gradually settle in the neck of the bottle, so by the time the cork was then drawn, the sediment removed and liqueur (a mixture of still wine and sugar) added, its strength determines how dry the wine will be.

Once this technique was perfected the champagne was crystal clear. A few minor improvements have been made, but the system is still in use to this day.

Before Madame Clicquot’s innovations, wine from the Champagne region bore little relation to the sparkling wine we know today.

The unique yellow label that the brand is known for was introduced in 1876 after Clicquot had challenges with fraudsters who were producing fake versions of her champagne.

By the time Madame Clicquot died in July 1866, sales had reached 750,000 bottles a year.

Veuve Clicquot in Popular Culture

Veuve Clicquot is mentioned as having been consumed by the fictional British Secret Service operative, James Bond, in three of the original novels: Casino Royale, Diamonds Are Forever, and Thunderball written by Iam Flemming.
