Think you would spend over $1 million on a bottle of whisky? If you won’t then you don’t love the brown distilled spirit well enough.
Over the weekend, two bottles of a rare 60-year-old Scottish Macallan whiskey were shown love when two separate buyers purchased each for a combined sum of $2.11 million.
According to High Snob Society, the whisky bottles were sold off at a Bonhams auction for fine and rare wines and whiskies. Both bottles are 75CL vintage bottles distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986 after maturation in a sherry hogshead cask. Only 12 of each Macallan was ever produced.
“These bottles are some of the oldest whiskies produced by Macallan in the 20th century,” Daniel Lam On-Tai, head of fine wine and whisky for Bonhams in Hong Kong, told South China Morning Post.
Both bottles were named after Italian artist Valerio Adami and British pop artist Peter Blake respectively. One bottle sold for HK $8.64 million to a bidder, while the other sold for HK $7.96 million to another anonymous buyer over the phone.
Nigerian Bottling Company, bottlers of Coca-Cola Coke in Nigeria, is partnering with Scotland-based spirit firm Edrington to oversee the management and distribution of its premium spirits category.
Under its business division, Premium Spirits Nigeria, the giant beverage company will promote a wide range of premium Scotch whiskies such as Macallan, Famous Grouse, and Highland Park.
“Under this partnership, there will be expanded distribution of these brands,” said the Director, Premium Spirits Nigeria, Idowu Adedoyin during the media launch in December 2017.
“PS Nigeria will be wholly engaged in the sale and distribution of premium spirits pan-Nigeria, with innovative plans to grow its product offerings to include other top globally ranked premium spirit brands,” Adedoyin said.
According to the Regional Director (Africa), Edrington, Derek Brown, the decision to partner with PS Nigeria was due to its strength as well as a high distribution network and experience in the Nigerian market.
“Over the years, Edrington has distinguished itself in the premium spirits segment in other markets where its brands are well established and are fully committed to marketing and promoting responsible drinking in line with local regulations,” Brown remarked.
Adedoyin further stated that PS Nigeria would continually engage Nigerian consumers across several platforms to increase awareness, drive engagement and build brand affinity.
