Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-coloured (black) grape varieties. The actual colour of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, through to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines. Much of the red-wine production process, therefore, involves the extraction of colour and flavour components from the grape’s skin.
Red wine from the Old and New World regions is very popular in Nigeria, there is, however, a tendency to rely on those characterized as safe, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Such varieties of red wine can however be produced in both New World and Old World wines, although the wines listed above originated from France; Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Chile are famous for producing quality red wines using these grapes.
Red wines can be light and fruity such as Beaujolais or bold and spicy, such as Chiantis or Barolos. In addition, red wines can be oak-aged, full-bodied and dry, an excellent example of such a wine is the Spanish Rioja Crianza.
