Great Cocktails you can make at home: Disaronno SourWritten by David MasifonPosted on 05 12, 2017
The Disaronno Sour has no special fairytale linked to it, but the liqueur itself has an amazing story to it.
An infusion of “apricot kernel oil” with “absolute alcohol, burnt sugar, and the pure essence of seventeen selected herbs and fruits”, the Disaronno came about as a ” simple gesture of kindness and the unique handmade combination of secret ingredients.”
The story goes that in 1525, the artist Bernardino Luini, a brilliant pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned by a Saronno church to to paint their sanctuary with frescoes.
In need of a muse to use, Luini chose a beautiful local innkeeper to help him portray the Madonna.
Work done and dusted, the lady sought to show her gratitude, and being a woman of simple means, she steeped apricot kernels in brandy and presented the resulting concoction to a touched Luini – and that is how the Disaronno Originale was born.
The warm, sophisticated taste of Disaronno makes it a good base liqueur for cocktails, which is why the Disaronno Sour is one classy cocktail.
