How to Choose the Perfect Wine

You might have gone through our wide selection of wines wondering what to choose and what criteria to follow. Frankly, buying wine can be very confusing and you can end up selecting a very expensive wine that does not match your preferences in any way. Here are a few tips to help you pick the perfect wine.

1. Food Pairing

A good rule of thumb is to get wine based on whatever food it is being paired with. You might have heard the ‘white wines with fish and chicken and some pork, and reds with beef and game’, however this rule is just oversimplified. Ideally, what you should do is pair light wines with lighter foods, such as fish, chicken and creamy sauces, and match full-bodied wines with bolder foods, such as beef, and game . You can also break out of this rule sometimes, you’d find that some nice light bodied reds pair quite well with fish and chicken.

2. Document your preferences

Keep track of the great wines you come across or drink. Write down the name of the winery, varietal, and Country of Origin. If sampling wine at the tasting room of a winery, they will usually let you have a copy of the wines you are tasting and their descriptions. Make note of your favorites.

3. Follow store ratings

Stores and online stores such as drinks.ng usually post the ratings of wines that are highly rated. Tastes differ, but if the wine has  high rating, there’s a high chance that lots of people enjoyed it. Be aware that most wines are never entered in competitions so you do miss some great wines if you only purchase wines based on their ratings.

4. Get assistance

The employee of a shop specializing in wine is usually knowledgeable about the wine they stock. Describe what kind of wine you want and you should get a great recommendation.

5. Do your research

If you want a bottle of wine for a special occasion, there are websites where you can research the type of wine you are looking for. Winespectator.com is one good source. Read the reviews and ratings to see if a wine stands out that you might want to try.
