According to Technical Director Jim White, the Pinot Noir grapes were hand-picked from March 24th until April 11th, at a point of excellent flavour concentration and acid balance. Then, the Pinot Noir fruit was all de-stemmed before being gravity fed into the open-topped fermentation vessels. The grape skins were gently plunged with an average of 18 days of skin contact. After fermentation, the wines were matured in French oak for 11 months, of which 35% was new.
The last few vintages of Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir see this wine begin to step out of the shadows of its more famous Sauvignon Blanc sibling. It has an alluringly, enticing Pinot nose of strawberries, earthy mushrooms, and smoky spice. The palate is soft, delicious, and integrated with red berry fruits, cherries, and fine, silky tannins. It has a warm red colour with notes of red berries, fresh fruits, and tannins. This delectable red wine is perfect for pairing with smoked duck breast, grilled portabello mushrooms, and a rack of venison on a summer evening.
